The Foreign Languages Department offers various English courses to the students enrolled in the faculties and vocational schools of İstinye University. These courses are mainly content-based skills courses that aim to improve students’ communicative skills while also equipping them with a broad knowledge of vocational English and content related to their departments. Thus, the courses focus on improving students’ English proficiency and academic skills, thereby helping them to be more successful in their undergraduate studies and future careers. The English course materials that are used in these courses are specifically developed for each department by our material development and publishing unit. Our English curriculum is designed to meet the needs and interests of each department and student.
Courses Offered for Turkish Medium Programs
In the first year, all students registered in our Turkish medium programs take General English I / II as obligatory courses. These courses aim to familiarize students with everyday expressions and basic phrases related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, employment, etc.).
In the second year, English for Specific Purposes I/II courses are offered as elective language courses to all departments. Each department determines weekly lesson hours and course credits according to their needs. These courses aim to expand students’ communicative skills by providing the basic content and terminology related to their academic disciplines in English. The English course materials that are used in our English for Specific Purposes I / II courses are specifically developed for each department by our material development and publishing unit.
In the third year, English for Academic Purposes I/II courses are offered to all departments. These courses aim to improve our students’ academic writing and reading skills.
In the fourth year, English Exam Preparation I/II courses are offered as elective language courses. These courses aim to prepare our students for the most accepted English proficiency exams around the world such as TOEFL and IELTS.
Courses Offered for English Medium Programs
The Foreign Languages Department offers various English courses to the students enrolled in the English-medium programs. In these courses, the aim is for students to practice the language skills they have previously acquired.
In the first year, English for Academic Purposes I/ II courses are offered to all departments. These courses aim to improve students’ academic writing and reading skills.
In the second year, English Communication Skills I / II courses are offered as language elective courses. These courses aim to improve students' speaking and listening skills.
In the third year, Introduction to Translation I / II courses are offered as language elective courses to all departments. These courses aim to improve students' English-Turkish / Turkish-English translation skills.
In the fourth year, English Exam Preparation I/II courses are offered as elective language courses. These courses aim to prepare our students for the most accepted English proficiency exams around the world such as TOEFL and IELTS.
